Lutein acts as filter against harmful blue light. Blue light is a wavelength within the visible spectrum of light. It is present in all visible light sources. When the eyes are exposed to excessive blue light, a chemical reaction takes place in the eye’s retina. Lutein can be found in areas of the retina’s light receptors where most of the possible damage by blue light can occur.
Lutein acts as an antioxidant to combat free radicals in the eye. Excessive exposure to blue light can lead to the formation of free radicals which can harm the eyes. Lutein prevents these free radicals from accumulating and from causing irreversible damage to the eyes.
