hint-to-have-a-healthy-midlife-pregnancyPregnant women who are 35 or older face some special risk, but many of these risks can be managed effectively with good prenatal care. It is especially important for women over age 35 to follow the basic rules for a healthy pregnancy:

  • Plan pregnancy by seeing a health care provider before you conceive.
  • Take a multivitamins containing 400 micrograms of folic acid daily before you become pregnant, and through the first month of pregnancy to help prevent birth defects.
  • Get early and regular prenatal care.
  • Eat a well balance diet. Begin pregnancy at a healthy weight (not to heavy or too thin).
  • Don’t smoke or drink before and during pregnancy. Avoid second hand smoke.
  • Don’t use any drug, even over-the-counter medications or herbal preparations, unless recommended by a health care provider who knows you are pregnant.
